Terminology for Rope Access comes from sailing, much like Building Envelope Terms. Rope, Block + Tackle and Pulleys have all been staples of technology for millennia. The advantage lies in simplicity, fast setup and teardown. The film industry was quick to adopt Rope Access Techniques as they realized the speed and ease of setup and disassembly on sets that cost thousands a minute to operate. As an added Safety Factor WCB, OSHA and other governing bodies embrace redundancy in the form of a Backup Safety Line, making Rope Work statistically safer than working on a ladder. Safe Working Loads (SWL) are calculated using a minimum of a 5 to 1 ratio. Often a 10 to 1 SWL ratio are employed to allow for user error and dynamic loading.
